Grossing Competency Assessment
A free, two-page PDF for documenting a staff member’s approved grossing scope, observed skills, and cases reviewed in a surgical pathology laboratory.
What the assessment includes
Grossing scope
Record competency across five specimen categories, with selections for all specimens, exceptions, or only the listed specimens. The scope section separates biopsies and small specimens, routine dissections, and more complex work, including oncologic resections.
Observed skills
Assess identification and triage, orientation and sampling, tissue integrity and traceability, documentation and communication, and safety and completion.
Case review and assessment record
Document cases reviewed, the assessment outcome, staff member and assessor details, and signatures. The form includes SOP/reference and document-control fields.
Using this template
Review the form against the staff member’s assigned duties and your laboratory’s current procedures. Record the applicable SOP/reference, observed work, review notes, and assessment outcome. Use the document-control fields to identify the version adopted by your laboratory.
